If you choose Kalymnos as the island to spend your vacations, you will be accompanied by the splendour of its traditional colours. You will be impressed by its mountains and scent of oregano and thyme together with of a lot of other scented herbs which will stay engraved in your memory for a long time. You will walk between its homogenous houses and you will be impressed by the vast colour variations of their windowpanes.
 The sponges are the trademarks of Kalymnos. They are the main occupation of most of is residents and they are the pride and joy of Greece. They are well known all over the world and the only way you can realize this, in not only by seeing them but by trying them, while enjoying your daily bath.

Kalymnos offers its hospitality without hesitation and it urges you to discover its beauties. So, take the first boat that leaves from Piraeus and reach Kalymnos after approx. 12 hours or an enjoyable sea voyage. If this might seem a bit too long for you, you might prefer the fast transportation that the airplane provides you. Take the first flight to Kos and from there with local boat you will reach your destination, as fast as possible, or you can use Kalymnos Airport, (probably gonna works Summer 2006)

Pothia is the capital of the island. Built amphitheatrically, it is spread out quiet a large area and is the first glimpse the visitor takes when the boat sets port. The port spacious and with many facilities it invites many small and large vessels in at its calm waters.
As soon as you set foot on the island and let your glance roam, you will see buildings that accommodate administrative units that first made their appearance around the 1930 and 1935.

Strolling through the little alleys, there at the center of the island you will find everything you desire at the small stores that are available. You can also expand your folklore, archaeological and shipping knowledge by visiting the various museums that exist here.

Distinct sample of civilizations of previous years is the infamous Tower of Kalymnos. Creation of the Knights of Saint John stands imposingly just a few kilometers from the city center. A little further out, history continues to show its samples, at the temple of KALIDNAIOS - Apollo.
